METU ID participated an international collaborative research project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council
METU Department of Industrial Design participated an international collaborative research project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AH/P006191/1), in response to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, in which methods of co-design and industrial design were used to identify new product opportunities that utilise indigenous material resources and crafts. Through creative product design thinking, 40 diverse product concepts with the potential to support an export-based supply chain have been identified and visualized. The project has been conducted in Loughborough University. In addition to the Middle East Technical University, the project has been supported by academics from, University of Nairobi (Kenya), Bandung Institute of Technology (Indonesia) and Kampala University (Uganda). Final presentations and closing ceremony of Interdisciplinary Design Studio 3 by METU Design Factory, which is conducted under ID403 Collaborative Design course, took place at the new Design Factory building on 20 January 2017. Our department hosted User Focused Design Workshop directed by Doğan Şekercioğlu from IDEO, USA. In the first session of the event which was organized by Istanbul Minerals and Metals Exporters Associations (IMMIB), Doğan Şekercioğlu presented IDEO’s design approach, design thinking methods and internet of things. In the afternoon he conducted the workshop in which 25 students from METU, TOBB ETÜ, Gazi University and Atılım University participated. At the end of the workshop participating groups developed design ideas on internet of things.
Graduation ceremony of Middle East Technical University was held on the 29th of June 2014, at "Devrim" (revolution) stadium. 29th of June being also World Industrial Design Day, the students and staff members celebrated both events.
A biomimicry workshop, namely `Design Informed by Nature` was held in METU Department of Industrial Design on November 22nd and 23rd. The participants had the opportunity to learn and apply the approach on how to design by taking forms, processes, systems and strategies from nature as models. In the workshop, `Biomimicry Sketch Analysis`, developed in METU Department of Industrial Design to design sustainable products inspired by nature, was intrduced to the participants. In "Dream Çiğdem Neighborhood" project, 3rd grade students in METU Department of Industrial Design have developed future sustainable scenarios for Çiğdem Neighborhood in Ankara in collaboration with Çiğdem Education, Environment and Solidarity Association. The project was structured with Participatory Design tehcniques, in which the neighborhood residants have taken part in various stages by directly participating in the process to structure the scenarios.
