Their inspirations sometimes are only on an aesthetic level, such as ranges of colours, shapes and textures, whereas at other times they involve natural phenomena such as birth, growth and structure. Sometimes the inspiration comes from efforts to reflect the observed perfection that is captured in nature. In the ‘Polymer Jewellery: Inspired by Nature’ project, nature is the students’ source of inspiration. Their work, which reflects their own voice/attitude towards nature, is an ‘adornment designed on screen and printed by rapid prototyping’. In contrast to natural materials and hand crafting, this additive computerized process enabled the students to produce ‘otherwise unobtainable forms’ reflecting the irregular complexity of the natural world. Complex or plain shapes, intricate or simple detailing, as well as repeating, growing or one-off forms, are all possible outcomes of rapid prototyping. Efforts to reflect nature through otherwise unobtainable forms is a good platform to discuss the perfection captured in nature, in contrast to the so-called imperfection experienced by mass-produced identical products.
