We are deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Acar, who served as the Rector of METU (Middle East Technical University) from 2008 to 2016. His modest and graceful personality, democratic and pluralistic leadership style, his approach of always standing by the staff and students, listening to them, and respecting their diverse opinions, as well as his calming and crisis-solving role in the most concerning situations faced by the university, made him an unforgettable administrator and an exemplary academic.

As the Industrial Design Department, he would always visit our graduation project exhibitions held at the METU Culture and Congress Center every year. He would walk through each stand, listen to our students' project presentations, and encourage them with his comments. He would quietly observe our jury sessions held in the small hall from the back rows; sometimes we only noticed his presence when he made a remark. Just like any other member of the METU staff, we would meet him on the pedestrian path, receiving his greetings addressed to us by our names; in the cafeteria, we would sit next to him upon his invitation, share meals, and engage in conversations. His supportive presence in every difficulty and his interest in and appreciation for our work empowered us, enabling our progress in our field and striving for excellence.

His contributions to METU will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his family, all loved ones, and the METU community. May he rest in peace.
